A Southerner's take on Colored Eggs and The Bunny:
March 31st, 2024
I’m inherently grouchy when it comes to obligatory holiday activities. All of the checking of boxes leaves me feeling exhausted and contemptuous, having lost sight of any actual focus of said holiday.
Being far from Florida, things often feel quite foreign, so we rely on food and home goods to bring a sense of familiarity. Everything pictured is old, broken in and comfortable; even the spoon and cloth napkin I suppose could be considered family heirlooms. It was a lovely morning cooking together, listening to music, surrounding ourselves with comforting familiarities of our home state.
The jammy mignonette eggs were soft boiled (Jorge has a particularly keen eye for soft boiling eggs), quickled and colored with beet juice. Hobie made the spiced carrot cake and we topped it with candied pecans, and bacon. While Rex and I made simple cast iron biscuits complete with a buttery cane syrup.
Today we celebrate new beginnings… rebirth. I’m grateful for a fresh start and the opportunity to spend quality time with my family. Quiet, slow, and not a checkbox to speak of.
